Sabani Life in Itoman

Sabani boats and their sails used to be part of the Itoman seascape until the first half of the 20th century. But they almost disappeared in the 70's with the apparition of high tonnage steel and FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics) fishing vessels.
Since the 2000's, enthusiasts are rediscovering this ancient art and today enjoy it as a sport. Sabani boats are also gaining popularity with visitors who want to find a new, cultural and ecological way to discover Okinawan seas. This section documents sabani in its new forms and shapes, and the revival of beautiful junk sails "walking" on Itoman reef flats.
